Rockbridge Reads! has several ways for you to support early literacy in our community. Please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the United Way of Rockbridge office at (540) 463-4482 to learn more about the following volunteer opportunities.
Rockbridge Reads! seeks new and gently used children’s books, particularly for children ages 5 and under. Board books and alphabet books are especially needed. We also accept picture books and early readers. Please no books with a religious or political theme.
You can clean out your own closet, ask your friends to clean out theirs too, or even host a book drive through your organization. United Way of Rockbridge can help you get started.
Once books are collected, Rockbridge Reads! works to get them into the community.
You might volunteer at a community festival to pass out books, work with the Children’s Book Outreach program of YMCA or commit to monitoring a distribution site once a month and restocking books as needed.
These are the current distribution sites in need of a monitor:
- Lime Kiln Creek Park (Little Free Library)
- Kids Playce Park (Little Free Library)
- Buena Vista Department of Health
- Department of Social Services
- Rockbridge Area Community Services Board
If you have an idea for a new distribution site that you would be willing to monitor, we would be happy to expand this list!
Rockbridge Area Health Center hosts volunteer readers on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:00. Volunteers read to children while their families are waiting for the dental clinic.
Rockbridge Reads! can also connect you with local preschools who are able to host volunteers.
Each reading site will have different requirements. Rockbridge Reads! offers short training on literacy and will then refer the volunteer to the reading site.
